Ortega Highway Businesses in the News

The Orange County Register ran an article on April 18, about construction along Ortega Highway reaching the halfway point, and the negative effect it has had on local businesses, including Hells Kitchen, Kristi's Korner, and the Candy Store.

Standing in the quiet general store nestled along the hills and forest-lined Ortega Highway, Kristie Fenstermaker watched as another of the waves of cars flew by, wishing out loud that one of the vehicles would break from the pack and pull into her struggling business.

Fenstermaker, the owner of Kristi's Korner in El Cariso Village, says her business is just barely making it. Unable to afford to pay an employee, Fenstermaker works seven days a week at the shop, even as she prepares to ship out to Kuwait in a few months with her National Guard unit.

"It's something that has to be done, but it does have an impact," Fenstermaker said of the road work. "The store has seen better days."

Some have fought back. Tyler Paulson, owner of Hell's Kitchen, a motor sport-themed restaurant and bar popular with motorcycle enthusiasts, has filed suit against Caltrans to halt construction and reimburse him for lost revenue. Paulson estimated his El Cariso Village business has suffered a drop in revenue of 30 percent to 40 percent since the work began.

"People don't have time to stop in, even for a quick burger, because they are going to be waiting in traffic. When I opened my restaurant, I was catering to the Orange County yuppie motorcyclist. They could get a nice ride through the canyon, sit and have a meal, and get out of the city," Paulson said. "Where I used to see customers at least two or three times a month, now I see those customers once a month or every six weeks."

Marilyn Ivy, the former owner of the Ortega Country Cottage Candy store, said the worst seemed to be over. The candy store lost about 40 percent of its business last year, Ivy said, but sales have begun improving.

"Last year was pretty slow, but people realize it's not too hard to get up here," said Ivy, who remains behind the candy store counter helping the new owner. "We are pretty much back to where we should be."

Ortega Highway Construction Update

So far the first 3/4 mile of Ortega Highway from the county line has been completed. But there's a long ways to go.

Support Our Troops IV - More Info

Some people have asked about the "Support Our Troops IV" charity event that we posted on this website last month. Specifically, they wanted to make sure that 100% of the donations actually get delivered to the needy families.

And the answer is "Yes!"

Support Our Troops started several years ago after Tyler Paulsen, the owner of Hells Kitchen, and his friend Timothy Kuzelka (the biker attorney), heard about a soldier that got killed in action. This soldier had his wife and kids living on Camp Pendleton. When he was killed, the base told his wife she had to move out within 30 days, and she didn't have much money. Some friends had to donate money to help her move.

That gave Tyler and Tim the idea of starting a charity event to collect money and gifts for military families during Christmas time. They talked to some other large charities such as "Toys for Tots", but discovered they could not actually meet the families that received these gifts. So to ensure that their 100% of the donations actually ended up with the families, they started their own charity event.

Contacts at Camp Pendleton identify about 15-30 of the most needy families there, and these families put together a wish list of what they want. Tyler and Tim use the money collected from the event registrations to buy the gifts on the wish list. During the day of the event, the families are bused to Quaid Harley-Davidson where Santa Claus makes an appearance to hand out the gifts.

In the subsequent years, both Tyler and Tim have tried to get corporate sponsors to donate funds and gifts. But because they were not actually a non-profit corporation, they couldn't find any sponsors. So this year, they actually created a non-profit corporation.

Hells Kitchen will be participating in "Support Our Troops IV", an event to raise money to buy toys and gifts for children of soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

On Saturday, December 1, 2007, we'll be the starting point of a ride that runs out to Quaid Harley-Davidson in Temecula. Hells Kitchen will be serving up breakfast to riders registered for the event. Breakfast runs from 8:00am to 10:30am, while the event at Quaid runs from 11:00am to 2:00pm.

Help us put smiles on the faces of our military families this Christmas, and register for the event. 100% of your donations go directly to these families.

Hells Kitchen Now Has a Full Liquor License

We'll be serving up your favorite mixed drinks and libations here at Hells as soon as we can get the stuff in house, which might be as early as this weekend (July 28, 2007), or if not, definitely by the following weekend.

Monday-Thursday, 10am-7pm
Friday, 10am-8pm
Saturday-Sunday, 8am-8pm

Ortega Highway Road Work Begins Today

CalTrans began their work on Ortega Highway today. The work is expected to last 3 years!

Meanwhile, Hells Kitchen remains open just as we've always have, 7 days a week, at the same hours. We're still serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, and still pouring beer.

Also note that Ortega Highway is not closed.

It will remain open during daylight hours, and most of it remains untouched except for a 3.3 mile stretch from the county line to the San Juan Creek Bridge. You can still travel from Lake Elsinore to San Juan Capistrano, and vice-versa, though it may take you a little longer than before.

It's taken a long time, but we finally have our official website online!

It's still a work in progress. We still don't have the menu and list of beverages online. We're still adding more photos to the Photo Album. But at least we have the homepage, directions and maps, and announcements.

Check back often, because we plan to post the latest news and happenings here at Hells Kitchen, including what's going on with Hwy 74 construction.

Further down the road we'd like to get a discussion forum and sell our world-famous merchandise online.

Thanks to the folks at Iron Horses Riding Club, Biker News Online, Bikers Ballroom, and Menifee 24/7 for designing, building, and hosting this website, and bringing the people together to make it happen.
